Rep. Jackie Speier Lends Voice to #MeToo Movement, Reveals She Was Sexually Assaulted as Congressional Aide

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) on Friday made a shocking admission: In a video posted on YouTube, she said she has a #MeToo story of her own from being sexually assaulted as a young Capitol Hill aide.

"I was working as a congressional staffer when the chief of staff held my face, kissed me and stuck his tongue down my throat, so I know what it’s like to keep these things hidden deep down inside," she said. "I know what it’s like to lie in bed awake at night wondering if I was the one who did something wrong.

"I know what it’s like years later to remember that rush of humiliation and anger."

It remains unclear who Speier is referring to.

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) on Friday made a shocking admission: In a video posted on YouTube, she said she had been sexually assaulted as a young Capitol Hill aide and has a #MeToo story of her own. Kris Sanchez reports.

Speier said she hopes coming forward with her experience will inspire other women in Congress — which she described as a "breeding ground for a hostile work environment" — to speak up "if they feel comfortable doing so."

She also urged people to join the burgeoning #MeToo movement and fight for justice.

"There is nothing to fear in telling the truth and it’s time to throw back the curtain on the repulsive behavior that’s thrived without consequences. The time is now," Speier stressed.

The Democratic Women's Working Group responded by commending Speier's move.

"Sexual harassment happens in virtually every workplace — and the halls of Congress are no exception," the group wrote on Facebook. "Thank you, DWWG Communications and Policy Chair Congresswoman Jackie Speier for sharing your story and standing up for what’s right. #MeTooCongress"
