Report: Man Hurls Hammer at Striking BART Workers

39-year-old SF man in jail on felony assault charges

That's no way to end a strike.

A 39-year-old San Francisco man is in jail on felony assault charges for allegedly throwing a hammer at a line of picketing BART workers on Monday, according to reports.

Vincent Matteucci was in front of the Daly City BART station on Monday when he encountered some workers out on strike. He hollered, "Get your asses back to work" -- and then threw a hammer their way, according to the San Francisco Examiner.

The hammer missed the picketing workers by 15 feet, the newspaper reported, but police were called.

Matteucci was found a short distance away, armed with a knife he called the "Whittler," according to the newspaper.

He claimed the hammer toss was in self-defense, but is now being held on $25,000 bail ahead of a Nov. 4 preliminary hearing, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office, which is handling the case.

BART workers returned to work on Tuesday.
