Retired Fire Captain Dies in Snommobile Crash

A retired South Lake Tahoe fire captain has died after a snowmobile accident near Carson Pass in the Sierra Nevada.

Alpine County sheriff's Lt. Ron Michitarian says 58-year-old Steve Taylor suffered a head injury after striking a tree Tuesday on his way back to the Blue Lakes Sno-Park.

The Tahoe Daily Tribune reports Taylor was pronounced dead upon arrival of a helicopter ambulance crew.

Michitarian says a preliminary investigation indicates the 5 p.m. accident may have stemmed from an ``unknown medical episode.''

An autopsy and toxicological examination are pending.

The accident is under investigation by the sheriff's department and California Highway Patrol.

Michitarian says Taylor was riding all day in the popular snowmobiling area with two friends prior to the accident.
