Richmond Collects Almost $850K in Marijuana Taxes

More than Chevron brings in cash in East Bay city.

Medical marijuana is bringing in the tax dollars in Richmond.

The city's four licensed medical cannabis dispensaries have generated $842,603.36 in revenue since they went online in 2012, according to the East Bay Express.

Richmond has taken a different tack than many cities in the Bay Area. There are no dispensaries at all in San Mateo County, and cities like Danville, Santa Clara, Mountain View and Cupertino have gone further to ban outright medical marijuana stores.

There are four clubs in Richmond, but there are up to six allowed under local law. And they're generating money.

Two more clubs would mean another $125,000 in revenue, according to Richmond police Chief Chris Magnus, who told the East Bay Express that the weed stores aren't causing crime.
