Richmond Man Killed While Dancing, Running on Hwy 4

A 33-year-old Richmond man reported to be dancing on state Highway 4 in Pittsburg late Thursday night was killed after he was hit by as many as three cars, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Around 11:50 p.m., CHP officers responded to reports of a pedestrian dancing and running from the right shoulder to center divider on eastbound Highway 4 east of Loveridge Road, CHP Officer John Fransen said.

As officers were en route to the scene, the CHP received additional reports that the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, Fransen said.

Officers found the pedestrian on a lane and emergency responders pronounced him dead at around 12:10 a.m. today, according to Fransen.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the pedestrian had been struck multiple times, possibly by as many as three vehicles, he said.

One of the three vehicles was a Toyota driven by a 49-year-old Brentwood man who stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities, Fransen said. The other two vehicles, one described as a dark-colored SUV, fled the scene, he said.

The Contra Costa County coroner's office has not identified the man pending notification of his next of kin. Anyone with information on the collision is asked to call the CHP's Contra Costa area office at 925-646-4980.
