Riders and City Officials Celebrate Extension of Lake Cunningham Park in San Jose

Thousands of riders assembled at the Lake Cunningham Regional Skate Park in San Jose to celebrate a new bike park extension with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, according to city officials.

Now named the Lake Cunningham Action Sports Park, the existing 68,000-foot skate park was expanded to a 10-acre sports park that provides seven riding zones including beginner and advanced pump tracks, a dual slalom track, a dirt jump zone, a slopestyle zone, a skills trail and a drop zone, officials with the city's Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department said.

Mayor Sam Liccardo, staff from the office of Councilwoman Sylvia Arenas and other elected officials joined in the official opening of the bike park.

Liccardo posted a video of riders on dirt slopes at the opening with the hashtag #LookMaNoHands, joking that he did a front flip on his bike and revealing in a reply that he was "pulling [his followers'] leg" and saying that such stunts terrified him.

Liccardo did ride after giving brief remarks at the opening ceremony.

The bike park was a $2.2 million cost to the city, parks department staff said. Amenities of the sports park include five bicycle and skateboard repair stations, a shaded patio with heaters and fans, free Wi-Fi, a park-wide sound system, shaded picnic areas and a water misting system.
