Rising Sea Levels Spark Concerns in SF Bay Area

Experts say the San Francisco Bay is rising and are warning city and county officials they need to start preparing.

Larry Goldzband with the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission and is trying to convince Bay Area leaders rising water levels matter.

"If they want to use SFO or the Oakland airport, they're affected," he said. "If they want to use East Bay MUD to flush their toilet or Silicon Valley water to get water, they're affected."

The Santa Clara County Civil Grand Jury calls it a slow-rising emergency and in a report points to a gauge near Fort Point.

The gauge has recorded a 7-inch rise in sea level over the past 100 years. Another study predicts a 6-inch rise by 2030, a foot by 2050 and 3 feet in 85 years.
