Two Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety officers are being credited with saving the life of a man who was stuck in an apartment building on fire early this morning.
The fire was reported at 12:07 a.m. at a four-unit apartment building in the 900 block of Civic Center Drive. When the patrol officers arrived, residents were screaming that there was someone still inside the burning building. The officers rushed inside, found the victim and carried him out to safety, department officials said.
The 20-year-old victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation, injuries that aren't considered life threatening.
The officers were also taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation but were quickly released and cleared to return to duty, department officials said.
Fire crews that had also arrived on scene extinguished the fire before the flames could spread to adjacent structures.
The building sustained an estimated $50,000 in damage, with fire damage to one unit and smoke, water and electrical damage to the other three.Displaced residents of three of the units were given help with housing by the American Red Cross while the fourth chose to stay with family, according to the department.
The cause and origin of the fire remains under investigation but it does not appear to be suspicious, department officials said.
