Runway at Mineta San Jose International Airport to Shut Down for Repairs

A runway at Mineta San Jose International Airport will be shut down for repairs this summer, according to airport officials.

The runway, which is one of two at the airport, will be closed for about two months starting in July.

"We will replace 55 concrete panels, it's a big section of pavement, in order to make sure that it is aligned with the remaining portion of that 11,000-foot runway," SJC Spokesperson Rosemary Barnes said. "To make sure pilots have the best conditions possible as they are both landing and departing our airport."

The planned closure comes as a pilot is speaking out about safety at the airport.

"There's some uneven pavement on the runway," pilot Doug Rice said. "There is some bad pavement in one section of the runway where it's breaking up."

Airport officials will not say if the planned work on the runway is a result of the complaint. Authorities do say the fix will take about two months and that it should not have a big impact on travelers.

"We don't expect any significant impacts to our flight operations," Barnes said.

Details on how much the runway repairs will cost were not immediately available -- the airport is currently going through the bidding process.

Officials said 80 percent of the project will be paid for by the Federal Aviation Administration and the remaining 20 percent will be picked up by the airport.
