BMW Smashes into Patrol Car Near SJ

Francisco Vega was charged with evading a peace officer and having meth.

Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputies arrested a 32-year-old man early Tuesday after they say he was speeding at more than 80 mph, smashed into a patrol car and tried to run away.

Sgt. Jose Cardoza said Francisco Vega is now in custody on charges of evading a peace officer, felony resisting arrest, possession of methamphetamine, being under the influence of a stimulant and having stolen property.

The chain of events leading to his arrest began at 1:23 a.m., Cardoza said, when a  patrol deputy noticed a dark colored BMW driving faster than 80 mph at the intersection of Alum Rock and White Road in East San Jose.

The deputy tried to stop the BMW, but the driver kept going, Cardoza said, committing several traffic violations, along the way.

At one point, the BMW smashed into a sheriff's patrol car at Aborn Rd and Lazy Lane, damaging the front end of the car, Cardoza said. Two deputies were checked out at the scene and didn't need to go to the hospital, Cardoza said.

Vega still did not stop, Cardoza said, driving his BMW into a private driveway in the 4000 block of Aborn Road.

Vega started to run away, ignoring deputies commands to stop, Cardoza said.

He was finally arrested after deputies found him hiding near a shed. Cardoza said he had two outstanding warrants for his arrest.
