SJ Cops Fatally Shoot Knife-Wielding Man

San Jose police shot and killed a 42-year-old man they say was wielding a 10-inch knife after he apparently tried to shoot himself with a nail gun over the weekend.

Sgt. Ronnie Lopez says officers responded to the man's South San Jose apartment at about 9:15 a.m. Sunday after his estranged wife reported that he had used a nail gun to shoot himself.

Police tried for up to 45 minutes to talk to the man through the door but got no response. They then forced their way into the apartment and found the man holding a knife. A nail gun was nearby.

Lopez says the man was "armed and confrontational," and three officers fired a total of about six shots at him.

The man died at the scene. His name wasn't released but a neighbor said he was a butcher at a local grocery store who would often bring hime meat to barbecue. The neighbor told the Mercury News the man was "a nice guy, really calm and pretty cool."

San Jose homicide detectives are investigating the death.
