VivaCalle San Jose will close downtown streets Sunday for an annual recreation event with biking, music, games, donations and performances.
The event will wind through historic locations in San Jose, hitting Emma Prusch Farm Park, Kelley Park, Parque de los Pobladores and St. James Square City Landmark District. VivaCalle means both "the streets live" and "long live the streets," as a celebration of outdoor play and open streets.
Mayor Sam Liccardo and Councilwoman Magadlena Carrasco will lead the bike ride out of Emma Prusch into downtown, and participants can join in either direction throughout the ride.
Story Road will be closed from Emma Prusch to the transition into Keyes Street, and further down to Willow Street at the railroad crossing near Pepitone Avenue. First and Market streets will be closed from Keyes to West St. John Street and St. John will be closed between First and Second Street.
There will be light rail and auto crossings at ten locations along the route, and all modes of non-motorized transportation are welcome. Ford GoBike is also offering free rides with a promo code "VC519."
Participants can access bathrooms, hydration stations and monitored bike parking at "Activity Hubs."
Parking restrictions begin at 1 a.m. Sunday, and streets will be officially closed at 6 a.m. The bike ride runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the route will re-open to traffic and parking by 4 p.m.
