SJ Firefighter Suffers Broken Vertebra on Thanksgiving

Capt. Rob Brown said the firefighter was in pain, bu also was in "good spirits."

Doctors on Friday were continuing to observe a San Jose firefighter who suffered a fractured vertebra in his neck and a concussion while fighting a Thanksgiving evening fire.

Capt. Rob Brown said the  firefighter was in pain, bu also was in "good spirits."

He was injured while battling a three-alarm blaze at a six-unit apartment complex on Willow Leaf Drive in San Jose near Leigh Avenue just outside Willow Glen.

Flames were seen shooting from the roof of the second story of the complex about 8:30 p.m., and the fire was under control about three hours later, according to a fire spokesperson.

The firefighter was injured when a roof collapsed on top of him during the fire fight. Brown said investigators did not have an official cause for the fire, but he had heard that a resident may have lit a fire in the fireplace, which may have sent flames up to the roof.
