Sacred Heart Helping Families in Need

The Sacred Heart Community Center in San Jose are now distributing their holiday food boxes for the needy. Damian Trujillo reports. (Published Monday, Dec. 18, 2017)

The Sacred Heart Community Center in San Jose are now distributing their holiday food boxes for the needy.

Families will receive a 50-pound box filled with the necessities for a holiday meal, including a turkey or ham. Families in need started lining up at the center on Monday.

In the Silicon Valley, a family of four earning $10,000 per year is considered low-income. Many of the families have jobs, but just do not earn enough to make ends meet in the Bay Area.

The line at Sacred Heart will disappear in the next couple of days, but volunteers said that does not mean the poverty in the area also disappears.

On Thursday, Sacred Heart will begin distributing toys and books for the holidays. The agency said it still needs 4,000 toys. For more information, visit Sacred Heart's website.
