Safeway Reimburses Overcharged Customers

Hundreds of customers at a South Bay Safeway are getting some money back.

The supermarket chain is reimbursing 700 "rewards" members who were overcharged at a Safeway gas station on Hamilton Avenue in Campbell.

A customer first reported the problem two years ago when she noticed she did not receive the discounted gas price when she used her rewards card.

Along with paying back the customers, the chain also paid a civil penalty of more than $46,000.

Safeway customers who were overcharged had their rewards cards credited.

An investigation showed the issue was caused by faulty software.
