A BMV driver died Wednesday morning after his vehicle crossed into the opposite lanes of traffic on U.S. Highway 101 in Salinas, knocked a Jeep into oncoming traffic, and then flipped, according to California Highway Patrol.
At about 9:46 a.m., the BMW was traveling south on Highway 101, when it crossed the grass median into the northbound lanes and struck a Jeep, CHP wrote in a news release.
The driver of the Jeep lost control of her vehicle, the Jeep hit traffic signs, then came to a stop in a southbound lane, said CHP.
The BMW also continued out of control and landed on its roof after slamming into a metal fence at the corner of Rosehart Way and Potter Road in Salinas, according to CHP.
The passenger in the BMW, a 25-year-old woman from Gonzales, was brought to Natividad Medical Center for treatment of moderate injuries. The identity of the driver was not immediately released, the CHP said.
The driver of the Jeep, a 28-year-old woman from Gonzales, suffered minor injuries. Her passenger, a 27-year-old man, escaped injury.
CHP did not know why the BMW driver drove over the median, but said neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the collision.
