San Bruno Elementary Students, Parents Protest Proposed Teacher Layoffs

Students and parents demonstrated in solidarity on Friday morning with teachers whose jobs are on the line at Belle Aire Elementary in San Bruno.

The San Bruno Park School District, which oversees Belle Aire Elementary and seven other elementary schools, is struggling with its budget. One of the budget solutions on the table for the school district is combining classes,  a change that would cost up to 17 teachers their jobs.

Fifth-grade teacher Kelsey Baxter told NBC Bay Area on Friday: “Unfortunately, I would be one of those teachers (to receive the layoff), so we have all of our students out here supporting all of us teachers and showing how they don't want (these jobs)to be cut.”

School Distict Supt. David Hutt said the loss of teacher jobs is one of many measures the district is taking to close its $2.1 million structural deficit. The district may also cut three administrative workdays and change bus services for special education students.

On March 11,  the San Bruno school board will vote on whether the teacher layoffs or any of the other proposed changes will go into action.
