San Francisco Police Conduct Special Traffic Enforcement Tuesday

San Francisco police will conduct a special enforcement operation Tuesday focused on bicycle and pedestrian safety.

Over the past three years, police have identified areas across the city where a significant number of pedestrian- and bicycle-related collisions have occurred.

Police are now responding to these areas with additional officers who will enforce traffic laws in an effort to prevent injuries and deaths. Tuesday, officers will be paying special attention to five specific violations: speeding, illegal turns, stop sign and red light violations, and failure to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

Police said that bicyclist and pedestrian fatalities are on the rise statewide. In 2016, 867 pedestrians and 147 bicyclists were killed in California, accounting for more than 28 percent of all traffic fatalities, according to police.

San Francisco police will also conduct special traffic enforcement operations on Feb. 20, 23 and 28.

Funding for these operations is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
