San Francisco Police Warn ATM Users to Be Cautious of Thieves

Undercover San Francisco police officers say chances are you are being watched at the ATM by thieves hoping to catch your pin.

Police report seeing thieves hanging out at ATM machines for hours -- watching for pin number and an opportunity to steal handfuls of cash.

"They'll quickly step up behind a person who conducted a transaction and attempt to stop the ATM from closing the transaction," said an undercover police officer who did not want to be identified.

Police last week arrested a team of three people on suspicion of robbery, conspiracy and credit card fraud after surveillance video from an ATM at 16th and Mission streets appears to show them connected to a similar pin-stealing crime.

"After watching a main individual conduct about half a dozen transactions we watched the victim come back and confront them, and was scared off by nearby muscle," the undercover police officer said.

Police said the suspects have prior convictions for the same crime. And in last week's case the suspects almost got away with hundreds of dollars from one account.

Police said if you see something suspicious you should do your banking somewhere else.

In addition, police advise using the ATM inside of a bank when possible and checking your bank statements.
