A San Francisco Sheriff's Office deputy's service gun was stolen from their vehicle, officials confirmed Monday.
The handgun, a Glock 17, was stolen Thursday in front of the deputy's home in Fairfield. The incident was also reported to Fairfield police.
"We take this matter seriously. Deputies are trained and admonished to properly secure firearms,' the Sheriff's Department said in a statement to NBC Bay Area.
Sheriff's Department officials said the deputy has been detailed to a position where a firearm is not necessary.
No other information was immediately available.
