San Francisco, Silicon Valley Has the Billion Dollar Startups

19 of the country's 24 billion-dollar startups are in the area.

Looking for the billion-dollar companies to bet the venture capital farm on? Look around you.

A full 70 percent of the companies "with valuations of $1 billion or more" are in either San Francisco or in Silicon Valley, the Silicon Valley Business Journal reported.

According to Pitchbook, the total valuation of 24 companies is $82 billion -- including $20 billion for IPO darling and San Francisco's tightly-held favorite Twitter.

Other things in common: men and information technology. Only three of the companies are headed by a woman, and only five are not "info-tech" companies -- the others are clean tech, health tech and space exploration.

In other words, capital loves technology.

Among the companies of which you've heard are Square, Airbnb, Pinterest, Uber, Box, Twitter, Bloom Energy, and Dropbox.
