The country's only handmade fortune cookie company may have to shut down due to San Francisco's skyrocketing rent.
Tucked in a Chinatown alley, the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Company has been a popular tourist destination for nearly 60 years. San Francisco has also designated it a legacy business in an attempt to preserve and keep it in the city.
But the company's owner said a dramatic rent hike, plus regulations might force the business out for good. In 2015, the company was paying $1,400 a month in rent. Last summer, the owner said the rent rose to $5,750 a month.
Moving out of the location is also out of the questions because of the equipment, which wa built into the building.
NBC Bay Area has reached out to the Office of Economic and Workforce Development, which oversees the Legacy Business Program. The office said they are looking into the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory's lease agreement with the landlord.
