San Jose City Council Approves Budget

The San Jose City Council agreed to close the city's record $118.5 million budget gap Thursday night, in a special meeting that lasted six hours.

The council voted 8-3 in approval of Mayor Chuck Reed's proposed budget plan, which assumes 10-percent pay cuts from five unions representing about 1,600 city workers.

The council agreed to wait until Tuesday to decide whether to impose the cuts or accept the last-minute offer from the union that they say would achieve the same cuts.
