San Jose Fire Chief Leaving for Las Vegas

San Jose Fire Chief Willie McDonald says he will accept top post at the Las Vegas Fire Department

San Jose Fire Chief Willie McDonald is heading for Sin City to become Las Vegas' top firefighter.

McDonald, who has served as San Jose's fire chief since August 2010, announced Thursday he has been nominated as Las Vegas fire chief and the appointment is pending final approval by the Las Vegas City Council in July.

"I will deeply miss San Jose and the great people in our fire department here, but this is a unique professional opportunity for me," he said in a statement. "I'm looking forward to advancing the work being done by the Las Vegas Fire Department in the field of pre-hospital emergency care, as well as continuing their leadership to achieve service efficencies through interagency collaborations."

Prior to joining the San Jose Fire Department, McDonald served as fire chief in Scottsdale, Ariz, and at several other California cities.

Mcdonald said he expects to start his new post in Las Vegas in late summer.
