San Jose Fire Station 11 Evacuated

The all-clear has been given after police and firefighters responded to a hazardous materials incident at a San Jose fire station Tuesday morning, fire officials said.

At about 9:40 a.m., fire crews were notified of someone who brought items that may pose an explosive threat to Fire Station 11 located at 2840 The Villages Parkway, a dispatcher said.

Some people had found old-style blasting caps and black powder used for mining in a storage unit and brought the items to the fire station for disposal, Fire Capt. Mike Van Elgort said.

Authorities were taking every precaution to make sure the items are stabilized, Van Elgort said.

The San Jose police bomb squad was been called to the scene, he said.

The station and nearby buildings were evacuated while others in the area have been advised to shelter in place, according to Van Elgort.

The incident has been classified as a "non-malicious event," he said.

No injuries were reported.
