San Jose Firefighters Battle 2 Separate Fires Friday Night

The San Jose Fire Department responded simultaneously to a fire at a grocery store and another at a home late Friday night, according to fire officials.

The first fire was reported at 10:11 p.m. at a home in the 2000 block of Delbarr Court near Almaden Road.

There were no reported injuries, but fire officials said the blaze displaced five people. It appeared to have started in the garage, caused by a gas leak from a car.

Firefighters brought the fire under control at 11:58 p.m., fire officials said.

The second fire was reported at 11:11 p.m. at the Senter Food grocery store in the 3900 block of Senter Road near El Cajon Drive.

There were no reported injuries in the fire and firefighters were able to bring the fire under control today at 12:39 a.m.

The fires taxed a department that is already struggling to improve response times.

"We have not met our response times, the San Jose Fire Department, for the last nine of 12 months...because we don't have enough boots on the ground," San Jose fire spokesman Joel Phelan said. "We had closed six companies a few years back. We've been able to add more staffing through...grants. But we've been unable to open any of those companies that have been closed.”

The cause of the fires is under investigation.
