San Jose Giants Team Up With Nonprofit for U.S. Troops

The San Jose Giants teamed up with community volunteers on Sunday to box up care packages for U.S. troops overseas.

Operation: Care and Comfort was held at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, with hundreds of volunteers gathering to sort, pack and address the care packages.

The items inside the packages ranged from socks to Top Ramen noodles to comic books.

The idea is to remind soldiers far away that they are appreciated by people back home.

"A lot of folks in the military don’t have families or they may have dysfunctional families," said Julie DeMaria, president and co-founder of Operation: Care and Comfort. "They may never receive a letter or box from home. Our letters and boxes may be the only thing they receive. It means a lot to them."

This is the fifth year the San Jose team, which is the Class A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, has partnered with the local nonprofit.
