San Jose Man Accused of Sexually Assaulting, Killing Girlfriend's 2-Year-Old Son: Police

A 22-year-old man suspected of sexually assaulting and killing his girlfriend's 2-year-old child, who was found at a South San Jose home earlier this month, was arrested Tuesday, police said.

Manuel Lopez, a San Jose resident, was arrested on suspicion of murder and child molestation, police Sgt. Enrique Garcia said.

Officers responded to a report of a possibly dead child in the 300 block of El Cajon Drive at about 9:40 a.m. on Jan. 16, Garcia said.

Responding officers found the 2-year-old boy and emergency crews took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Garcia said.

Police did not release the child's name as of Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators determined the toddler died from a homicide and an autopsy showed the child was sexually assaulted, according to Garcia.

On Monday, detectives identified Lopez as a suspect and arrested him the following day, Garcia said.

Lopez was booked into Santa Clara County Jail, where he is being held without bail, according to jail records.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call police Detective Sgt. Pat Guire or Detective Ken Tran at 408-277-5283. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers at 408-947-7867.
