San Jose Man Arrested in Connection to Gang-Related Shooting

A 35-year-old man was arrested Tuesday in connection to a Jan. 14 gang-related murder, San Jose police said.

Jesus Bustos, of San Jose, was arrested without incident and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail following a lengthy investigation, according to police Officer Albert Morales.

The probe into the shooting of 34-year-old Steve Hyman was "extensive and complicated" and involved "gangs in our community," police homicide unit Cmdr. Lt. Mike Kihmm said in a statement.

The arrest of Bustos was the result of work by homicide detectives and the Police Department's Gang Suppression, Metro and Covert Response units, according to Kihmm.

Police received a report at 5:31 p.m. on Jan. 14 about shots fired and a person down in the area of Loma Verde Drive and Eden Avenue, east of Winchester Boulevard.

Hyman was found suffering from at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene a short time thereafter, police said.

Hyman and Bustos did not know each other but police believe the shooting was the result of street gang activity and expect the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office to add a gang enhancement allegation when Bustos is charged in the murder, according to Morales.
