San Jose Mayor Encouraging Residents, Businesses to Register Security Cameras to Help Police

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo is encouraging homes and businesses that have security cameras to register them on the city's website.

Liccardo hopes the network of registered security cameras in San Jose will  help capture activity that police otherwise miss.

"We have a city of 180 square miles," Liccardo said. "We cannot put a police officer on every street corner, but we have a community of people who want to step up and make the streets safer."

Police report more than 5,000 burglaries in San Jose last year.

"It just got to be so bad that everyone started putting cameras up," resident Anthony Brazil said.

Liccardo said when a camera is registered, handing over the footage is completely voluntary.

"There's no viewing of live feeds in this initiative," Liccardo said. "The only thing the police can do is ask permission of a resident or store owner of past incident."
