San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo was struck by a car while bicycling Tuesday afternoon near Sierra Road in the east foothills, according to the mayor's office.
A spokesman said Liccardo was taken to Regional Medical Center in San Jose "a bit banged up, but it’s nothing overly serious."
The incident occurred about 12:30 p.m. in the 600 block of Salt Lake Drive, the mayor's office said.
The mayor suffered minor fractures and will be kept overnight for observation and then return home in a day or two, spokesman David Low said.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
The mayor was resting and in good spirits late Tuesday.
In a statement, Liccardo said: "I’d like to thank compassionate neighbors like Linda and Tom who rushed to help immediately after the accident; the fast and professional response from Fire Station 19 and the San Jose Police Department; the wonderful paramedic care from Alex and her team; and the outstanding medical attention from Dr. Jimenez and the entire staff at Regional Medical Center."

He then joked: "Fortunately, the doctors state that all defects to the head were pre-existing conditions."
