San Jose State to Play in Military Bowl in D.C.

Coach will enjoy the bowl game in the nation's capitol, but had hoped to play a bowl game in Nashville- near his dad

San Jose State is going to the Military Bowl.

Bowl officials announced Friday that the Spartans of the Western Athletic Conference play a yet-to-be-determined team from the Mid-American Conference in the game at RFK Stadium in the nation's capital on Dec. 27.

The Spartans finished the regular season 10-2, giving the school its first 10-win season since 1987. They will be playing in their first bowl game since a 20-12 victory over New Mexico in the 2006 New Mexico Bowl.

This year's Military Bowl was set to feature Army against a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference, but Army isn't bowl eligible and the ACC doesn't have enough eligible teams to fulfill its bowl tie-ins.

The announcement means SJSU coach Mike MacIntyre will not be able to play in front of his ailing father.

MacIntyre's father George MacIntyre is bedridden 24 hours a day with multiple sclerosis and lives in Tennessee. He has never seen his son coach in person, but is glued to the television each time San Jose State takes the field.

MacIntyre had held out slim hopes of coaching in front of his father if San Jose was invited to play in the Music City Bowl in Nashville.

The two talk before and after each game, with dad often quick to offer praise of his son's players and even instructions to target a particular receiver more regularly.
