Police said a student brought a gun to San Jose's Chaboya Middle School on Thursday, marking the fifth such incident on Bay Area campuses in just this past week.

The most recent incident began around 11:35 a.m. when officers responded to a report of a firearm being found on a student at 3276 Cortona Drive, police said.

Several students told a teacher that a 12-year-old boy took the gun out of his backpack and brandished it at them.

The student was taken into custody, said police, who determined that the gun was unloaded. The firearm belonged to the child's father who kept it locked and unloaded at home.
