San Jose Train Trestle Engulfed in Flames

A San Jose train trestle burst into flames Wednesday afternoon.

Flames at East Julian Street and Wooster Avenue around 4 p.m. created thick black smoke that could be seen for miles.

Fire officials said the fire started as a grassfire, which spread to vegetation, and then to a train trestle and a nearby bridge. The train tracks have not been in use for some time, officials said.

The blaze caused a lot of concern because it sparked close to an apartment building and Rocketship school, which was evacuated. Nearby residents also reported a strange smell.

No injuries were reported, fire officials said. The fire is under investigation and officials have not yet determined the cause.
