San Jose Wants To Help Zipcar Expand

South Bay city wants more car-sharing, offers Zipcar free parking.

There is such a thing as free parking -- if you are Zipcar.

In a bid to encourage the car-sharing service to expand its offerings in San Jose, the city is set to offer Zipcar free parking, according to San Jose Inside.

Up to 40 public parking spots would be all Zipcar's under a City Council deal that could be approved Tuesday.

Currently, Zipcar has 30 vehicles in San Jose, and 874 members, the Web site reported.

That might not seem like a lot in northern California's largest city. Indeed: "not enough people are using the cars" for city officials' liking, the Web site reported.

Zipcar will get the 40 spots under a pilot program that requires the car-rental service to provide one private spot for each public one, according to the deal.
