San Jose's 29th Homicide Victim Was Shot While Relative Parking Car

San Jose police on Tuesday identified the city's 29th homicide victim of the year as 24-year-old Richard Watkins of San Jose, who they say was an innocent bystander killed while one of his family members was parking his car.

Watkins was killed Saturday in the 100 block of Azucar Avenue near Roeder Road around 9:20 p.m., police Sgt. Heather Randol said.

In a statement, police said that one of Watkins' relatives was visiting him. While that family member was trying to park, a suspect or suspects shot at him.

The relative avoided being struck, police said, but one of the stray bullets hit Watkins, who was waiting in front of his house. Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect or suspects fled on foot and have not been found.

"At no time did the victim or relative" provoke the suspects, police said, adding neither belong to any street gang.
