San Mateo County Non Profit Helps Match Roommates with Affordable Housing

A limited supply of rental properties and sky-high prices in the Bay Area has unlikely pairs calling each other roommates.

HIP Housing, a non profit based in San Mateo County, is helping residents find affordable places to live by coordinating house-sharing opportunities.

Selina Melchor, a 21-year-old college student, is one of many in the Bay Area who can't afford to live alone.

"I've been living here for quite awhile, and I didn't want to live in an apartment," Melchor said.

HIP Housing was able to match Melchor with 72-year-old Cornelia Carrillo, who needed to downsize, but did not want to. Now Melchor and Carrillo live together in Daly City.

"I love Cornelia. She's a beautiful, sweet lady," Melchor said. "She reminds me of family back home. It's the perfect fit to be honest."

And that's what Hip Housing strives to do by matching people based on common characteristics.

HIP Housing has been coordinating house sharing in San Mateo County for more than 40 years. View more in Jean Elle's video report above.
