San Mateo Honors Congressman Killed in Jonestown Massacre

Post office to be remaned for Leo Ryan

A San Mateo post office where assassinated U.S. Rep. Leo Ryan once had his congressional offices was renamed in his honor Monday.

Ryan was killed in the Jonestown massacre in Guyana in 1978. He had traveled to Guyana with a small entourage to investigate the remote agricultural settlement.

Ryan represented San Mateo County in the House from 1971 until his death in 1978.

The ceremony was held at 10 a.m. and comes a day before the 30th anniversary of the massacre.

U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier -- who traveled to Jonestown with Ryan and was shot five times in the attack -- authored the legislation for the renaming of the post office.

She attended the ceremony.
