Man Suspected of Ramming Police Car in Vallejo, Officers Injured

A San Pablo man allegedly rammed a police car during a pursuit in Vallejo Saturday night, injuring two officers and disabling the car, police said today.

Tae Kwon Do Henry Clay Maxwell, 35, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and felony evading arrest following a high-speed pursuit that ended in a collision with a patrol car at Springs Road and Avian Drive, according to Lt. Kevin Bartlett.

Vallejo patrol officers first encountered Maxwell around 11 p.m. Saturday when they spotted a Chevrolet El Camino in East Vallejo that was wanted for allegedly evading officers during a traffic stop a few days earlier, according to Bartlett.

The driver allegedly turned off the car's headlights and sped away, triggering a short pursuit before he ultimately lost control at Springs Road at Avian Drive, Bartlett said.

The vehicle spun out when it took a turn at high speed, and ended up facing a patrol car. The driver then allegedly accelerated and drove into the patrol car, Bartlett said.

The driver tried to switch into reverse and flee but the Chevrolet was stuck in neutral. He tried to flee on foot and was arrested at the scene, Bartlett said.

Maxwell and one officer were treated at a hospital for injuries received in the crash and released, while a second officer was treated at the scene. The patrol car was disabled in the crash.

The California Highway Patrol is assisting in the investigation.
