Sand Castle Contest Returns to Ocean Beach

A popular sand castle competition is back at Ocean Beach.

It was canceled last month because of the government shutdown.

Ocean Beach is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which is run by the federal government, so the beach was shut down.

On Saturday, students from more than 20 elementary schools built sand castles along with some artists.

The young builders said they put a lot of work into the project.

"If somebody like just came here and wanted to see our masterpiece in sand, we would tell them, he or she, that it's very detailed, and it took a lot of hard work and it was actually very fun," eight-year-old sand castle builder Kiya Shimozato said.

Shimozato and others helped raise money for public school art programs.

Last year's event raised $253,000 for Leap.
