Cooling centers will be open in Santa Clara County this weekend with extreme heat and temperatures expected to reach up to 100 degrees.
Residents are asked to take safety precautions, including staying hydrated, limiting physical activity and avoiding alcohol, caffeine and other substances that speed up fluid loss.
Children and pets should not be left alone in cars, and residents should avoid being outside during peak afternoon heat, county officials said.
According to the National Weather Service, the highest temperatures will register in the eastern foothills, Morgan Hill, Gilroy and South County.
County officials encouraged residents to check in on people who may be having adverse reactions to heat, including homeless people, elderly residents, people with mental illnesses and people with drug or alcohol disorders.
They can also be directed to over 40 cooling centers throughout the county in public spaces such as community centers, libraries and hospitals between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
