Santa Clara Engineers' Lottery Pool Wins Big

Now this was a good outcome for a work lottery pool!

They didn't win millions, but a lottery pool at an unnamed Santa Clara company did get a nice chunk of change for a group of Silicon Valley engineers.

A group of eight co-workers each put $5 in a lottery pool for last Friday's draw and ended up winning $227,955.

The six men and two women purchased their winning ticket at Liquor Tobacco & More on South Mary Avenue in Sunnyvale.  It was one of 29 spots in California that hit 5 of the 6 numbers.

Lottery officials said the engineers joked about being tempted to try their luck again and "double down," but since engineers tend to be a logical bunch that doesn't seem likely.

MEGA Millions is a multi-state game, played in 41 states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The final jackpot amount for Friday's Mega Millions drawing came to $656 million. That record-shattering amount was the result of unprecedented sales.

The Mega jackpot will be split by three tickets that matched all six numbers. Those tickets were sold in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.

KNBC in Los Angeles put together the below report on lottery pool etiquette.
