Approved on Nov. 20, 2nd District Supervisor Zach Friend created the rule to protect the Monterey Bay ecosystem.

β€œSingle-use plastics have dire consequences for these ecosystems and threaten our local economy, and we must act locally to protect them,” Friend said in a statement.

It will be presented to the Board of Supervisors again on Dec. 4 before it is fully appointed.

The ban is expected to go into effect Dec. 31, 2020 giving time to hotels to make adjustments.
