Santa Rosa Man Pleads Guilty to Impersonating Brother

A 26-year-old man convicted of a crime while using his brother's identity has pleaded guilty to perjury, false personation, child endangerment and two DUI violations, according to the Solano County District Attorney's Office.

Ross McDermott, of Santa Rosa, entered his plea to the charges Friday in Superior Court and will be sentenced on Oct. 8 to seven months in jail and four years of supervised probation in a plea bargain, district attorney's office spokesman Christine Cook said.

On Feb. 18, McDermott was arrested on suspicion of DUI by the California Highway Patrol, but a follow up investigation by the CHP and the district attorney's office determined he had been living under the assumed identity of his brother, who lives out of state, Cook said.

Using fingerprint records from the county jail and on file with the Department of Motor Vehicles, investigators found out that McDermott had applied for a new driver's license under his own name after he was convicted of a crime using his brother's, authorities said.

Prosecutors charged him with felony perjury for making false declarations on DMV forms for a second driver's license and misdemeanor false personation for being convicted of a crime under his brother's name and identity.

The child endangerment charge came from a second DUI arrest after he got into a minor accident with his children in the vehicle he was driving, prosecutors said.
