Old Bay Bridge Pier Imploded on Saturday

As part of a years-long project, Caltrans imploded part of the eastern span of the old Bay Bridge on Saturday.

The “controlled, underwater implosion” used 8,000 lbs. of explosives to demolish the E-5 support pier around 12 p.m. It lasted roughly three seconds, according to the Caltrans website, where it was streamed live.

Caltrans says the project does not harm marine life because the blasts are contianed.

Pier E-4 is set to be dismantled on Oct. 29.
