Sharks' Three-Game Winning Streak Snapped by Ducks

SAN JOSE – Ryan Getzlaf scored a second period power play goal to give Anaheim the lead, and the Sharks were never able to respond in a 3-2 Ducks win at SAP Center on Saturday night.

The Ducks led 2-1 after the first, but after long shift the Sharks fourth line featuring call-up Ryan Carpenter at center, Dylan DeMelo beat Jonathan Bernier through a screen at 9:43 of the middle frame.

Anaheim regained the lead for good a little more than three minutes later, though, with Getzlaf’s first goal in 16 games. The Ducks captain got open in the slot on a power play, and had all kinds of time to pick his spot and power home a wrist shot at 12:59, from Ryan Kesler.

The Sharks’ three-game winning streak was snapped, while Anaheim won for the first time in four games (1-2-1). San Jose is 3-1 on its five-game homestand.

The Sharks lost defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic after the second period. He was being evaluated for an unspecified injury, according to the club.

San Jose squandered a chance to move into first place in the Pacific Division, ahead of idle Edmonton.

Logan Couture’s seventh goal, five of which have come on the power play, opened the scoring. He buzzed in a wrist shot from the top of the circle with Hampus Lindholm off on a delay of game minor.

Anaheim managed to tie it at 1-1 on a controversial goal at 9:44, when Ryan Garbutt plowed into Martin Jones while managing to take the puck with him over the line. The official ruling was that the puck crossed just before the net came off its moorings, and after a coach’s challenge, it was determined that Brent Burns pushed Garbutt into the Sharks goalie.

Rickard Rakell put the Ducks ahead for the first time at 13:21, batting a loose puck through Jones after Getzlaf flung it towards the net from the point and it bounced around in the slot.

The Sharks won the only other game of the season series, 2-1 in overtime at home on Oct. 25. They visit Honda Center twice next month on Dec. 9 and Dec. 27.

Special teams

The Sharks were 1-for-3 on the power play, getting one goal for the third time in four games.

Anaheim was 1-for-1. The Sharks are just 11-for-15 on the PK in their last six games, after going 25-for-25 in the previous 11 before that.

Getzlaf’s goal ended Anaheim’s 0-for-27 power play drought against the Sharks, dating back to Nov. 29, 2014.

In goal

Jones, who had Friday’s game off, took the loss with three goals allowed on 26 shots.

Bernier, who has significantly outperformed John Gibson to this point, made 21 saves.

Lineup

Coach Pete DeBoer shortened his bench in the third period, as Carpenter, Micheal Haley and Mikkel Boedker all stayed on the bench.

Carpenter was replacing Tommy Wingels, who suffered a lower body injury on Friday against the Islanders and is day-to-day. It was just his second career NHL game.

DeMelo was inserted for Brenden Dillon, who was scratched for the first time for reasons that weren’t immediately clear. Barclay Goodrow, recalled on Saturday morning, did not play.

Up next

The Sharks conclude their homestand on Tuesday with Arizona, and visit Los Angeles for the first time on Wednesday.
