Sheriff Deputy Opens Fire on Suspect

A Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputy opened fire on a suspect in  a stolen vehicle in San Jose Saturday. The suspect was not injured and was  later arrested, San Jose police said.

San Jose police responded to reports of the deputy-involved  shooting in the area of Park Avenue and Sunol Street shortly after 11 a.m.

Police said the sheriff's deputy was on patrol in the area when he  saw a suspicious vehicle. A dispatcher informed the deputy that the vehicle  was stolen, police said.

Police said the suspect in the vehicle behaved in a way the deputy  considered threatening, and the deputy fired several rounds at the suspect,  but did not hit him.

The suspect then fled to a nearby industrial yard at 255 S.  Montgomery St. In a search of the area, officers found Omar Muhdi, 37, of San  Jose, who was arrested.

Muhdi was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for suspicion of auto theft, possession of stolen property and parole violation.

The deputy that shot at the suspect has been placed on routine  paid administrative leave. Since the shooting happened in the San Jose Police  Department's jurisdiction, the San Jose police Homicide Unit is investigating  the incident.

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to contact Sgt.  Dave Gutierrez or Detective Brian Spears at (408) 277-5283 or call the Crime  Stoppers tip line at (408) 947-STOP.
