Small Grass Fire Slows Eastbound Traffic Over Altamont Pass in Alameda County

Firefighters have contained a vegetation fire on Altamont Pass in far eastern Alameda County Saturday night to less than two acres, Cal Fire reported in social media.

The fire was started shortly after 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the California Highway Patrol said, when a car was forced off of eastbound Interstate Highway 580 near the North Flynn Road interchange by a big rig.

The car rolled up an embankment and caught fire, which in turn ignited dry vegetation, Cal Fire said.

The fire, fought by Cal Fire, the Alameda County Fire Department and the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department, was contained by 9:15 p.m. Saturday. No one, including the car driver, was injured.

Eastbound traffic on I-580 continued to move slowly through the area, with the two right lanes close as of 9 p.m.
