South Bay Jailer Sentenced Today for Sex Crime

A nearly 17-year veteran of the Santa Clara County Department of Corrections is expected to learn his sentence following his conviction on several child sex crimes involving a niece.

Jose Zarate is scheduled to appear Monday in Santa Clara County Superior Court for sentencing on charges including lewd and lascivious acts on a child by force, on a child under 14, violence, duress and fear.

Zarate faces up to 30 years in prison. Prosecutor Ray Mendoza says Zarate's minimum sentence would be nine years because he was convicted of a forcible sex crime.

Karinah Guzman, 21, says Zarate molested her for about four years, starting when she was about 9 years old.

She says she's speaking publicly in an effort to help others in similar situations.
