The team won a trophy and $1,000 for Miller Middle School’s science department.

Five middle school students at Miller Middle School in San Jose won top prize at the 2016 National Science Bowl.

Chinmay Lalgudi, Jonathan Huang, Milan Ganay, Emily Liu, Sathvika Anand are this year’s Department of Energy National Science Bowl champions.

The team won a trophy and $1,000 for Miller Middle School’s science department.

“It was really great,” eighth-grader Milan Ganay said.

The team was chosen following tryouts at school. The students practiced twice a week with a teacher and parent volunteer.

During the competition, the students doubted victory after losing in the first round. But members of the Lynbrook High School team from San Jose, who were also competing, gave them the encouraging words they say they needed to become champions.

The Lynbrook High School team won second place in the high school competition.
